A Legacy of Learning: The Story of St. Bridget’s Convent Montessori
- Since it’s humble beginnings in 1946 St. Bridget’s Convent Montessori has been a beacon of Early Childhood Education guided by the Stewardship of the Good Shepherd Sisters.
- Originally established under the guidance of Rev. Sr Mary of Our Lady, the Montessori took roots within a former nursing home in Torrington Place. This place lovingly transformed into a House of Children that was generously handed over to St. Bridget’s Convent by Dr. Ratnam marking the beginning of a cherished tradition in Montessori Education.
- In 1963 the little learners bid farewell to their beloved building with a vibrant Christmas performance, as the space was repurposed as an Infirmary for the Good Shepherd Sisters.
- Montessori classes then found a new home at 181, Turret Road in January 1963, providing children with a refreshed and dedicated learning environment.
- However, the growing demand for Montessori Education then called for a purpose-built facility. Recognizing this Rev. Mother Good Counsel Mills, then the provincial of the Good Shepherd Sisters and a staunch advocate of Dr. Maria Montessori’s principles, approved the construction of the new building within St. Bridget’s Convent.
- Renowned Architect Geoffrey Bawa meticulously designed the structure, ensuring it met the unique needs of young children. Adding to its charm, original paintings by our very own Past Pupil Mrs. Barbra Sansoni adorned the walls, delighted the little ones and enhancing the Montessori experience.
- The new Montessori building, located on the southern edge of St. Bridget’s Convent with independent access from Maitland Crescent, welcomed its first students in 1966, while construction was going on.
- The completed building was blessed by Bishop Marcus Fernando on 12th July 1966 in a joyous ceremony. Sumanthri Jayasuriya, a fourth generation Bridgeteen garlanded the Bishop. She was the very first entrant to the new block.
- Over the decades the Montessori continued to evolve.
- In 2008-2009 renovation to the entrance and the Principal’s office improved accessibility for parents.
- The year 2016 marked another milestone – The construction of a much-needed hall for annual events. This achievement was made possible by the unwavering support of the Rev. Sisters, benefactors and parents who recognized the necessity of such space.
- Today St. Bridget’s Convent Montessori stands as a testament to a rich legacy of love, learning and dedication. It remains a nurturing environment where young minds continue to grow guided by the timeless principles of Montessori Education enduring vision of those who built it.
